For the first time in my life, I went into a movie and exited feeling an odd sense of emptiness.

I don't get the story beyond what's obvious:

Naoko's in trauma due to her childhood best friend cum boyfriend 's suicide, and develops mental illness. Close friend Watanabe somehow fell for her (or was it just the common history and shared grief that made him feel close to her?) and tries to give her moral support for her recovery. Along the way he falls for another, Modori, but because of the sense of 'responsibility' he feels for Naoko, he decides not to continue with Modori. In the end, being together with Watanabe somehow aggravated Naoko's illness, and she hangs herself. After some grieving and thinking over, Watanabe realises he loves Midori, and contacts her.

Er. Yeah, so I 'understood' the movie. But, I just don't get it. It's like watching a story unfold without getting invested, emotionally. I feel cheated of my time. Maybe I'm just too superficial to understand it's deeper themes.

The most confusing scene was at the end. Since when did Watanabe and Reiko develop such a close relationship, so close that she stayed over at his place, and even suggested sleeping together (which Watanabe agreed to). @.@ Maybe reading the original novel would clear up things, and bring into the picture what was inevitably lost in the transition to big screen, but I've not watched enough to warrant such an interest.
