OTONOHA Vol.209

Regarding the article submission for Newsweek

Hello.
It’s me.

For purpose of the Newsweek submission, I first went around shopping for a laptop.
Since my school days, it has been about 15 years that I last touched Microsoft Word.
(Although I used a laptop up to around 2008 to write rap lyrics, I have been using my smartphone in recent years)

And so, using a laptop, and in Microsoft Word, this became my first article submission. Congratulations.
The burden on my right thumb has been reduced. Thank you.

How have you been doing?

It feels like it's getting a little warmer recently..
And the pollen is terrible

This is the most bothersome period for me..
Let's hold up against it, those with hay fever.

There are various things to watch today ne.

Have you watched them?

Of course, I've watched them too.
The digest clips for Arafes and This Is 嵐.

It's been a while since we saw Arashi. (Laugh)

For me, I did the checks, but I still felt nostalgic.
But I remember it like it happened just yesterday.
The order of the Arafes setlist, the things we did; I didn't forget them.

Although it's a digest, I think it conveys the feeling of fun so please try to watch it.

There is also the Netflix release today.

I watched it again as well.

Yeah, it's nostalgic.

Once again, I feel thankful to the director and staff for following us around for such a long period of time.
There were times where I showed annoyance on my face right? (LaughLaugh)
But I think it's really meaningful that we get to record the behind-the-scene part of this milestone, rather than just the front of it.

I also saw the tweets from fans.

A good song will needs a good timing (Laugh)

I know that! (Laugh)

No, but
These guys from Arashi suddenly released it all together in 1 day (Laughs)

Well, please watch them slowly when you have time.
Don't miss it

Happy Valentine's!

Wishing all a day filled with love - all types of love!

Below is a translation of part of TV Guide 20.12.19-21.01.04 where #Arashi talks about what each member means to 嵐

嵐にとって〇〇とは〇〇である

To Arashi, _____ is ______.

To Arashi, Ohno is...

S: A pillar of strength. I'm sure everyone knows this - he is like a soul of talent. When he performs on stage, that is precisely artistic talent. Although he doesn't say much, I feel that he is supporting my back. I think that is extremely significant for Arashi.

A: Riida. I'm really glad that Ohno-san is our leader. I think he's the new image of a leader and ultimately, a reliable person. It's difficult to express in words what is 'new', but it's probably because Ohno-san is our leader that Arashi has this kind of atmosphere.

N: A choreographer. When he choreographs for Arashi, he says, "I'm choreographing based on what I think fans want to see." I think he can make those considerations because it's him.

M: The hand meant to express. For sure, his artworks come to mind and with his intricacy and dexterity, many things get expressed by his fingers. By his hands he expresses various things. In our case, his dancing too. His hands come to mind most when I think about his characteristic.

To Arashi, Sho is...

This is probably obsolete since the official subs are out (awesome!!) but a friend wanted them and it's not the tear-inducing bits so here it goes~

And this is the part where they spoke about fanvid submissions.  The 5x20 one they mentioned is here (I'd like to think :D)

I don’t want to speculate why OSA were at NHK building (there could be tens of reasons), but the fact that the ‘successor’ special navigator has not been appointed even until now (and we know that advance planning is a thing in Japan, especially for something as huge as the Olympics), gives me hope that MAYBE it’s because they are still trying to see if Arashi can continue this role.

Also, no offence to other Japanese artistes (and only Japanese artistes because it defies logic if a non-Japanese artiste is appointed the special navigator for the Tokyo Olympics), but it’ll be rather stressful to take over as ‘successor’ of this role.

My only concern is that….I feel like it’s tons of expectations heaped onto our Riida and I don’t want him to feel forced to appear under the spotlight again.

What are your thoughts?

*disclaimer*
Friday is a tabloid so I would take this with a huge pinch of salt. Let's not get our hopes up high solely based on this rumour, and let's not go to their official accounts requesting that they continue the special navigator role.

Actually, I have always thought about this. The invisible Arashi member. Staff-san, manager-san.

Without them, the executing parties, Jun’s mind-blowing concert ideas will just remain as ideas. We could enjoy the This Is 嵐 LIVE conceert because they had worked crazy OT hours executing the ideas.

All these years, it was with the support of these behind-the-scenes people that Arashi made it this far.

As fans, we feel sad letting them go. How much it must hurt for the staff-san who have been working with them since they were newbies? It’s so heartwarming to read about Arashi thanking and acknowledging their contributions.

As fans we don’t thank them enough.

I’m not a fan of Josei Jishin’s articles, but this article gave some insights on how busy they were in the last week of the year, as well as how they are appreciated by different TV stations and people working in the industry.

-----------------------

Matsumoto Jun's effort in Arashi's "Last one week"...Rare participation in Kouhaku discussions by the artiste himself

It was just past noon on 25 December; a week left before Arashi's hiatus. We found Matsumoto Jun in Tokyo. What caught our eye was the fact that he was wearing short-sleeved T-shirt in the cold weather.

He left the building which houses a gym he frequented. Holding a down jacket in his hands, he got onto a car driven by an agency personnel.

All members of Arashi gathered for meetings and rehearsals starting from the noon of the 25th. They were to perform at the Music Station SP that night. It was about 11pm by the time everything ended (industry personnel).

By the way, on the day before, the 24th, the live broadcast of final episode of Fuji TV's program, VS Arashi, ended. It was probably difficult to go to the gym in the midst of this packed schedule, but perhaps the desire to show his professionalism to his fans roll the very last moment spurred him to do the physical training.

A TV station personnel said that he was simply impressed by the sight of Arashi's "Last one week".

Translation of this Nikkan Sports interview under the cut. Read it in conjunction with Nikkan Sport's last interview of Arashi here.

Another group may rise up and surpass Arashi in sales in the future.  But in terms of Arashi's soft power: how they won widespread recognition even by non-fans, across age groups, and created many intangible assets in fans' lives and shared memories?

When the whole industry acknowledges and, dare I say, celebrates their success (not downplaying the commercial factor), when so many current/ex-staff, guests, fellow artistes, senpais send their well wishes, when kouhais see them as someone to aspire after...

Arashi is indeed top. I don't think anyone can surpass them.  And we are allowed to think that.

If we continue to deny the obvious out of humility, isn't that a form of hypocrisy?

For fans at least, they can never be surpassed. Fans may move on, but will they find another Arashi?

Here in this separate article, it says

"The entertainment scene was indeed in a state of "Arashi Festival". Starting from the music shows of each TV station, TBS's Japan Record Awards, NHK's Kouhaku, and then the livestream concert. Up to the moment of hiatus, it was all about Arashi."

Translation of this thought piece. It resonated well with me - the sense that Arashi is my youth and how they have never changed. The environment has majorly changed, the form of things has changed, but at their core, Arashi has not changed.

THE REASON FOR THE CONTINUING "LIVING ROOM FEELING" AND "ORDINARINESS"
- SEARCHING FROM ARASHI'S HIATUS

Arashi went on hiatus at the end of 2020. For 20 years, they have continued to run at the top of the entertainment industry. We search for the secret tactic from their words.

"People change quickly. But there are 4 persons who continued at it without changing anything."

On New Year's Eve on 2020, Ohno Satoshi said this during the final greetings at the last concert before Arashi's hiatus.

To think of it, Ohno Satoshi also made such a comment during the 5 persons' vacation location shoot for Arashi ni Shiyagare's last episode.

"We are unchanging"

Although it was a casual comment, I think it clearly shows the reason why Arashi could continue to be the national idol.

Only translating the Arashi-related part.

Timing of highlights

What's different from previous years is the timing of the highlight.

The lineup after 21:30 comprised GReeeeN, Arashi and LiSA, 3 performers who received a lot of attention this year. By placing them at this early timeslot, this splendid strategy caused the reach rating to increase by more than 4%.

GReeeeN is a vocal group which sang "Hoshikage no Yell", the theme song for the morning drama "Yell".

That morning drama's broadcast was affected by the Corona pandemic and became irregular. Its contents also had to be changed. Furthermore, the deceased Shimura Ken was also part of the cast. As such, it became a much discussed topic. The group had never revealed their looks and was set to appear in the form of a virtual reality performance, making it a much discussed topic.

Not to mention Arashi's last performance before their hiatus.

Between the songs performed, each of the 5 persons gave greetings. During the final song "Happiness", the highest reach rating of 32.86% was recorded. It is a Kouhaku performance that will be etched in memories.

In addition, LiSA, who sang songs including the theme song to Kimetsu no Yaiba, Japan's highest grossing box office movie in history, also put up a good fight.

Even after they enter into hiatus, Arashi is the "Five Musketeers". I hope the day will come when they become one again.

Arashi entered into hiatus on 31 Dec last year. A Daily Sports reporter who used to be in-charge of Johnnys' news looked back at the past 21 years.

"One for all, all for one" This quote from the Three Musketeers symbolises Arashi's past 21 years.

In 2002, Aiba Masaki suffered from pneumothorax. The following week, Arashi had to head to Hawaii for a fan event. Due to the nature of the illness, it was impossible for him to take the airplane. However, Aiba had a tube inserted into his chest in order to adjust the air pressure, and made a forced trip to Hawaii. Holding back the pain, Aiba said with a smile, "I can't make everyone worry." His feelings towards his friends and the fans, as well as his professionalism, could be seen. Arashi was like the "Five Musketeers".

In 2021, Ohno Satoshi entered into a break and Arashi will not be seen for a while. A group which is close to the people and which insists on being ordinary. To this reporter who felt lonely, a Johnny's artiste said, "It's ok. Arashi will always be in everyone's hearts." There is a group called Arashi, and what they conveyed to us will not disappear.
