49 Days

I can't say that 49 Days is my favourite kdrama for this season, since I've read good reviews for Do You Hear My Heart? of which I've only managed to catch 2 episodes (that showed promise).

But I do enjoy 49 Days, much more than I had expected myself to.

The cast (not just the leads but the supporting too) are convincing.
The characters (the leads and a few of the supporting) have depth, making them interesting. Even the villain tugs my heartstrings at times.
The plot is well-layered, exposing just a bit more every episode, like puzzle pieces slowly falling into place, just that this puzzle is 3D, with many layers. There are new findings, new rules, new relationship deevlopment every episode, reducing the usual drama drag towards the middle. And of course, it makes sense.

Sense.

Like the villain's (Min Ho) reason in ep 14 for his scheme.

It's not that his target family wronged him or anything. It's just bad luck, the same bad luck that caused him to be born into that poor and desperate family. Since God has gave him such bad luck, he'll just pass it down to some other people. Just like how he can't blame anyone for his family background, they can't blame him for trying to change his situation in life - at their expense.

If I were Han Kang (omg, I love his name), I would tell him that he's not God, so he doesn't have the right to do that.

But I'm just a viewer, so what I can do is to rationalise Min Ho's reasoning. Flawed as it sounds, if put into Min Ho's perspective, I an actually understand it. For someone like Min Ho, who grew up in fear and starvation, I wouldn't be surprised if his thinking is warped by his hatred of his fate. In fact, that sounds more reasonable than the usual kdrama melodramatic web of feuds and revenge!

I love Ken Hirai's voice (the coarseness...), and how he likes our boys.
